Oak Frame Houses – Barnack

This is a stunning example of our Oak Frame Houses. Properly detailed, timber boarding green oak extensions gives an attractive alternative to masonry and can last many years without maintenance. Direct glazed gables and dormers flood the interior with light.

Oak timber frames

Oak timber frames give the possibility of framing the floors as well as other aspects including the wall studs and rafters. We used a ‘Serlio floor’ detail to create architectural interest and because it solved a design problem. Serlio was a renaissance architect attributed with the invention of the ‘reciprocal’ arrangement of oak floor beams enabling the oak frame carpenter to achieve larger spans than the maximum length of the beams allowed. Oak frame houses expose the structure and the results are beautiful.

The master bedroom of this example of our oak frame houses is framed in green oak with an arched collar braced truss modelled on something we saw in a French farmhouse in The Mayenne. The feel of being in an wood framed ‘Ark’ is complimented by the larch sarking boarding which has a rubbed paint finish.
