Jaipur Gate
1 / 5
Given to Queen Victoria for the Empire and Commonwealth Exhibition of 1864 by the Maharaja of Jaipur, the structure is made entirely of Teak. It stood outside the Brighton and Hove Museum for many years without proper weathering, hence the structure was badly decayed in spite of the exceptional durability of Teak (Tectonis Grandis).
The Green Oak Carpentry Company was commissioned to record and dismantle, develop and agree a repair method in conjunction with the museum curators, and to restore and reassemble back on site. Apart from our carpenters, our engineer and the museum curators no other consultants were involved. This we believe saved the museum thousands of pounds.
Gold leaf has been used for the lettering which is remarkably durable. Not the new lead work which has been laid over the roof structure and which will greatly Improve longevity of the structure.
No carved motif is repeated anywhere on the structure making each panel unique. Reclaimed FSC Teak was sourced from northern India to replace the decayed sections. The columns in particular were in poor condition hence in several instances the carved surfaces were cut off and bonded almost invisibly onto a sound dry Teak core.
This picture was placed in the Argus at the time of the opening of the newly refurbished Teak Gate and shows two of our carpenters putting the finishing touches to the structure.
“"Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such a great team to do the work. As well as clearly being very hardworking and hugely skilled, Mick, Andy, Clark and Dave were all exceptionally pleasant, considerate and cheerful guys to have around, and as such a huge credit to Green Oak."
Julia, Crabfields Farm
“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."

“"Seems a long time since we finished with the garden room project but we have to say that it has been a huge success in every aspect. The room has become the place of choice for visitors. I can guarantee that everyone, yes everyone who visits, is blown away by the frame."
Mel, Moat Farm
“"Thank you for the frame that you have just finished at Rogate. It was a miserable wet day, yesterday and John and team carried on regardless. We are delighted with the overall look and also the mouldings to the members. As usual, the frame was millimetre accurate and will be easy to take forward to complete the building."
