Micklefield Hall Barn
1 / 3
This lovely 9 bay barn repaired by The Green Oak Carpentry Company has two porches at the ‘mid-strey’ in bays 3 and 7, giving wagon access to these and the other bays for loading and storage. The barn, kept as a single open volume of space, makes a wonderful wedding venue and is situated near Rickmansworth. Timber boarding is weathered oak left to colour naturally.
The porches have been added as new in a manner sympathetic to the original barn structure. Oak joinery is clad externally with the glazing retained with oak cappings, a patent glazing system has been used for the roof, all of which ensure trouble free operation and longevity of the primary timber frame of the porches.
Retention of as much of the historic fabric as possible is vital to a successful repair. A light touch is always better, as once lost the original structure cannot be put back. It is important to accept the quirkiness of the structure and make good decisions based upon sound conservation principles. Black metalwork has been used for the tie-straps, etc., lighting conduits and chandeliers, very much in keeping with the rustic aesthetic.
“"Thank you for the frame that you have just finished at Rogate. It was a miserable wet day, yesterday and John and team carried on regardless. We are delighted with the overall look and also the mouldings to the members. As usual, the frame was millimetre accurate and will be easy to take forward to complete the building."
