Once part of the old Café building, this cross wing frame was lovingly restored in 1989. It is a good example of the quality of repair that can be achieved when the building is dismantled and repaired 'on the bench' before reassembly in its new location.
The hall is 14th century and is predominantly made from elm. Here we look from the open hall to the cross-wing passage with service rooms below (pantry and kitchen) and solar above. Evidence of smoke blackening is clearly visible on the main truss in the foreground. Note the collar rafter couple roof with no trusses.
The building has been moved for a second time from its former lakeside location to make way for the Museum’s new gateway building. Here we see the newly completed building with the later added 16th century cross wing. The building displays typical Kentish style framing with broadly spaced studs forming wide panels and with large ‘tension braces’. The building is from the North Downs near Canterbury.

“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."

“"Seems a long time since we finished with the garden room project but we have to say that it has been a huge success in every aspect. The room has become the place of choice for visitors. I can guarantee that everyone, yes everyone who visits, is blown away by the frame."
