Drydown Farm
1 / 7
The dwelling is located within the Surrey Hills AONB, where this frame forms a handsome extension to the main farmhouse. In this picture you are looking into the octagonal dining bay, where if you look carefully you can see a Sirlian Floor. See next image.
We have highlighted in pink the relevant section, clearly showing the arrangement of Sirlian Floor beams. The device was commonly used during the Renaissance era to achieve greater spans than the available timber lengths would otherwise allow.
This floor beam and the plate above forms a girder truss in order to carry both floor and roof loads safely. Note the King post bolt used to tighten up the truss. Three large roof lights allow top light to flood into the interior.
Long view through from the main hall, shows the open plan living space, with lounge, dining and kitchen areas (to the right of shot) all interconnected.
The extension created a spare bedroom seen here with its Arched Collar Braced Truss, a highly attractive form of raised tie truss. The rectangular bay window is also part of the framing.
Brick and glass infill panels form the octagon elevations. Note that we have shaped the main corner posts into pentagonal sections to allow the the rails and sills of each facet of the octagon to joint at right angles to the posts.
This lovely master bedroom has stunning views over the surrounding farmland. We took a lot of care to create an interesting arrangement of primary and secondary rafters in the roof structure. Note the use of an octagonal boss to collect all the principle rafter tops.
“"Thanks for the excellent job which has just been completed on the Oak Frame extension to the above property. Not only is the quality of the work faultless, it is a true work of art, which will bring endless enjoyment to me and my wife. The end result has surpassed our wildest expectations."

“"I wanted to drop you a quick note to show my appreciation for your guys efforts today; they were a pleasure to have around the house and worked hard to get the frame up today."
Paul, Contracts Manager
“"Thank you for the frame that you have just finished at Rogate. It was a miserable wet day, yesterday and John and team carried on regardless. We are delighted with the overall look and also the mouldings to the members. As usual, the frame was millimetre accurate and will be easy to take forward to complete the building."
Bob, Trembath Associates
“"Just to say that it looks fabulous, and all who survey it are wonder-struck. Best wishes and many thanks to you all."
Simon, National Trust
“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."
