Moat Farm
1 / 6
This lovely 2 bay forms a new sitting room extension to a beautiful moated farmhouse. The central truss is a raised collar tie type which works well on small spans and steep pitches typical of this part of the East of the country.
The decision to use traditional sashes led to much research into ultra thin double glazed units, which were used here supplied by Pilkington. A single large double glazed panel has traditional glazing bars attached to form a traditional sash which blends well with the other elevations of the farmhouse.
The fully hipped and of the building has dragon ties to strengthen the plate returns at the corners. Note also how the common rafters fan out at the corners, a detail you will find used in the raftering of Mediaeval frames.
Cleft oak laths from the Cleft Wood Company were used to create the visible sofit of the building rather than the more usual plasterboard. We think the effect is stunning and well worth the expense and effort. Note the bridled rafter tops - no ridge board. Another detail typical of an earlier style found in historic frames.
It is not uncommon for clients to ask us to carve a date or their initials (as is the case here) into one of the oak frame beams, and we are happy to oblige!
Note the steep pitch and use of the gablet. All in keeping with the original farmhouse. We suggested glazing the gablet to bring light into the building at high level, a device that has worked well for this building.
“"Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such a great team to do the work. As well as clearly being very hardworking and hugely skilled, Mick, Andy, Clark and Dave were all exceptionally pleasant, considerate and cheerful guys to have around, and as such a huge credit to Green Oak."
Julia, Crabfields Farm
“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."

“"We wanted to write to you to express our profound gratitude for the excellent work you have done on our building scheme. It cannot have been easy to pick up the project from another architect when there were still a number of issues unresolved, but you have done so brilliantly and remained calm throughout, even at fraught times. We really do appreciate that you have gone the extra mile for us. We have all enjoyed working with you and have been so impressed with the quality of your work."
