Poulton House
1 / 5
The Green Oak Carpentry Company were engaged to design and engineer the roof structure of this extraordinary building, which is clad internally almost entirely with Larch and forms the new games room to the main house.
The Georgian style exterior clad with Bath Stone contrasts markedly with the ‘Canadian log cabin’ interior. We worked with Smallwood Architects and Symm & Co. builders both of whom were excellent and collaborated with us to ensure the best possible outcome.
The span of this building is over 10 metres and with a flat lead roofed central section required a really strong truss to support substantial roof loads. The Queen Post truss is the perfect solution to this problem as it can terminate at the collar level to form a ‘flat top’ and is immensely strong. We have opted for a steel tie rod to lighten the appearance of the truss. A central spine beam and common ceiling joists form the flat roof of the building which has firrings set over to create the falls for the lead roof.
A mezzanine forms a snug area and really gets you up close to the carpentry. The log cabin style is used with great success to create a warmth and homeliness that is highly appealing.
Dragon beams and ashlar post with braces forms a decorative and strong detail at the corners of the top plate ring beam. All in all, a fascinating project we were pleased to play our part in helping to realise.
“"We wanted to write to you to express our profound gratitude for the excellent work you have done on our building scheme. It cannot have been easy to pick up the project from another architect when there were still a number of issues unresolved, but you have done so brilliantly and remained calm throughout, even at fraught times. We really do appreciate that you have gone the extra mile for us. We have all enjoyed working with you and have been so impressed with the quality of your work."
Alastair, The Early Years Project
“"Just to say that it looks fabulous, and all who survey it are wonder-struck. Best wishes and many thanks to you all."
Simon, National Trust
“"I wanted to drop you a quick note to show my appreciation for your guys efforts today; they were a pleasure to have around the house and worked hard to get the frame up today."
Paul, Contracts Manager
“"Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such a great team to do the work. As well as clearly being very hardworking and hugely skilled, Mick, Andy, Clark and Dave were all exceptionally pleasant, considerate and cheerful guys to have around, and as such a huge credit to Green Oak."
Julia, Crabfields Farm
“"Seems a long time since we finished with the garden room project but we have to say that it has been a huge success in every aspect. The room has become the place of choice for visitors. I can guarantee that everyone, yes everyone who visits, is blown away by the frame."
Mel, Moat Farm
