This is a successful new build barn-style house giving the appearance of being a conversion of an historic barn, which in an area of outstanding natural beauty can be a useful strategy to smooth the way through planning. The wide-sawn Larch weather boarding has been stained a grey colour to improve longevity and replicate the weathered look. Note the 'hay loft' doors, a reference to traditional barn architecture.
The building is a storey and a half style frame which is proving very popular with clients and planners alike. Setting the top plate a minimum of 1.2 metres above floor level ensures full usability of the available first floor space. The roof has an attractive barn style 'open eave' formed in this case with oak sprockets fixed over the insulation to ensure an air tight envelope.
The hallway is an attractive open volume of space with long views through into the sitting room giving a spacious feel. The landing is formed with cantilevered joists which have an Ovolo mould cut into their ends to form a pleasing termination.
Views from the landing through the full height glazed screen create a beautiful light and airy space. Note the interrupted-tie type truss which avoids having a low tie beam cutting through first floor spaces.
Open plan living and dining rooms create wonderful entertaining spaces and are increasingly popular with clients wishing to build their own home, indeed we put this high on the list of reasons for wanting to build an oak framed dwelling.
“"Thank you for the frame that you have just finished at Rogate. It was a miserable wet day, yesterday and John and team carried on regardless. We are delighted with the overall look and also the mouldings to the members. As usual, the frame was millimetre accurate and will be easy to take forward to complete the building."
Bob, Trembath Associates
“"We wanted to write to you to express our profound gratitude for the excellent work you have done on our building scheme. It cannot have been easy to pick up the project from another architect when there were still a number of issues unresolved, but you have done so brilliantly and remained calm throughout, even at fraught times. We really do appreciate that you have gone the extra mile for us. We have all enjoyed working with you and have been so impressed with the quality of your work."
Alastair, The Early Years Project
“"Thanks for the excellent job which has just been completed on the Oak Frame extension to the above property. Not only is the quality of the work faultless, it is a true work of art, which will bring endless enjoyment to me and my wife. The end result has surpassed our wildest expectations."
Ray Nicolaides
“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."
P White, Northholt & Greenford Countryside Park Manager
“"Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such a great team to do the work. As well as clearly being very hardworking and hugely skilled, Mick, Andy, Clark and Dave were all exceptionally pleasant, considerate and cheerful guys to have around, and as such a huge credit to Green Oak."
