make the most of their plot’s sweeping valley views. They wanted to achieve
this with a contemporary, open-plan home that would bring the stunning
surroundings into the heart of their living space.

An architect-designed home
To make the most of this enviable location, Plum Architects proposed an ‘upside-down’ design built around an oak frame. The first-floor, open-plan dining, kitchen, and lounge area is surrounded by extensive glazing, allowing uninterrupted views. A generous south-facing balcony extends along the first floor, offering additional opportunities to appreciate the landscape. The sheltered ground floor provides a secluded, restful bedroom area. The Green Oak Carpentry frame designers worked with the architects to develop an oak frame that would support this structure.
A contemporary exterior
Centring this property around an oak frame roots it within the Hampshire landscape. The frame gently supports the contemporary external aesthetic and softens the visual impact of the standing-seam Zinc roof and swathes of glass. The external oak surfaces will eventually weather to a silvery grey, evolving the building’s appearance as they do.
A spacious, light-filled interior
Internally, the oak structure creates a captivating open-plan living space with a spacious oak-framed kitchen, dining, and living area, flooded with natural light. Our designers chose to support the vaulted ceiling with sling-braced oak trusses, a technique that dates back to medieval times. This ancient, time-proven building method benefited the build in two ways – forming a striking architectural feature and avoiding the need for tie beams, allowing a clear line of sight.
The breathtakingly high ceiling has an almost ecclesiastical effect, with the glazed gable end looking out over neighbouring greenery. It contrasts sharply with the modern stairwell, illuminated by a continuous slot of glazing which further infuses the interior with natural light.
Naturally beautiful
Sandblasting the interior oak surfaces has created a uniform finish with a tactile raised grain that enhances the sense of warmth and calm within the home. The resulting pale straw hue of the oak surfaces will endure over time and complement the oak-framed kitchen and bold turquoise accents.
