What is a sun room?
What is a sun room?
Sunroom extensions – sometimes referred to as ‘solariums’ – mean different things to different people. However, everyone agrees on one thing – a sunroom extension is designed to let sunshine flood inwards, through large windows, glazed doors or roof lights.
They typically have less glass than a conservatory and have a solid roof. Many sunroom extensions are designed so that they’re more integrated into a building than a conservatory.
How can you use an oak framed sun room?
Sunroom extensions are deservedly
popular for their versatility and
often become the ‘top spot’
in a house
Thanks to their calming connection to the outdoors. As a light-filled and flexible space, they can be used in any number of ways:
An informal lounge area, perfect for a peaceful morning coffee
A bright and airy space in which to work, study or craft
A relaxed family area that naturally connects with the garden
A scenic dining area, perfect for relaxed meals with family and close friends
A sheltered workout space in which to build your strength and fitness
However you choose to use your oak framed sun room, you’ll have somewhere to relax, enjoy your surroundings and feel at one with nature.

Our materials
Oak is a popular choice for sun rooms, but it isn’t always the best choice for a project. We work with you to choose the right materials, based on your site, aesthetic goals and engineering requirements. We only use sustainably sourced materials.
Fabrication
Each oak frame sun room is handcrafted from start to finish by our same team of award-winning carpenters. Using skills practised since the Middle Ages, they scribe the naturally shaped components together, making each frame unique.
Build & installation
After dry-fitting your oak frame in our workshop, our carpenters deconstruct it, deliver it on-site, and personally assemble it. Using the same team throughout build and assembly creates a rare level of consistency, giving your frame unsurpassed care and respect.
Bespoke finishes & specifications
We’ll work with you to agree on the best finishing options and specifications for your oak-framed sun room. This will allow you to appreciate the beauty of this celebrated natural material while complementing your aesthetic.
The Green Oak Carpentry guarantee
All our frames carry a warranty against defective workmanship and materials for six years. Problems are very rare, but if they do occur, we take them very seriously and do our utmost to ensure all is well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Planning your Sun Room
What is the difference between a sun room and a conservatory?
Although you may hear the terms sun room and conservatory used interchangeably, they’re not the same thing. An oak frame sun room is more substantial than a conservatory and is designed to blend in with the rest of your home, and feels more like a building extension. They usually have more substantial, better-insulated walls and roofs with large windows that allow natural light to flood inwards. In contrast, a conservatory is almost entirely made of glass – both on the walls and ceiling.
Why do people have sun rooms?
People have oak framed sun rooms for many reasons – but most commonly to add extra space to their home from which they can enjoy the view of their garden or surroundings.
Is a sun room warm in winter?
A well-designed and well-built oak frame sun room extension will be well-insulated, so it will feel comfortable, even on chilly winter days. However, as with the rest of your home, you will need to ensure your sun room is adequately heated during the winter, as the sun’s heat may not be enough to keep it fully warm.
