Why choose an
oak framed house?
Oak frame houses are renowned for their charm and distinctive appearance, with exposed beams and natural textures lending a timeless, warm character. Oak frame construction methods allow for grand vaulted ceilings, expansive open-plan layouts and panoramic glazing that flood the interior with daylight, resulting in a home that defies expectations.
Yet under this beauty lies something even more rewarding – their sustainability. Our oak frame houses are built with renewable resources and constructed responsibly, reducing their environmental impact. This is enhanced by the potential lifespan of an oak framed house – many that were built hundreds of years ago are still lived in, just as we hope yours will be.
Styles of oak frame houses
There’s no such thing as a typical
oak timber frame house, and each
of ours is fully bespoke.
The classic oak frame home draws on centuries of timber building – exposed oak posts, beams and braces forming a structure that’s visually striking yet perfectly pitched for how we live today. Imagine your future home built with a cruck frame rising in a sweeping arc of curved timber, creating an almost ecclesiastical interior – vast, light-filled and unmistakably oak. Traditional building techniques using green oak create spaces that other methods and materials simply cannot match.
Oak frame construction lends itself naturally to contemporary architecture – its structural honesty and natural warmth softening the clean lines and open volumes that modern design demands. Many designs integrate floor-to-ceiling glazing directly into the frame, flooding the interior with light while keeping the structural oak fully visible and resulting in a considered and calm contemporary home.
A hybrid oak frame combines oak and softwood within a single structure – giving you control over where timber takes centre stage. Oak beams can be used where they will have the most impact, such as an open-plan living space, a dramatic entrance hall, or a high-impact vaulted kitchen, while softwood carries the structure in other, less prominent rooms.
A well-designed oak frame extension does more than add space – it changes how a home feels to live in. A vaulted ceiling with exposed purlins opens the room upward, transforming what might otherwise be a modest addition into the room everyone wants to be in. The combination of well-judged design and the beauty of green oak creates a quality seldom found in other spaces.
A well-designed oak frame porch does more than provide shelter – it reframes and revives your front elevation. The right proportions, roofline and joinery detail can transform an unremarkable entrance into something that feels considered and complete, giving your house a new sense of presence.
Never repeated. Always remarkable
Every Green Oak Carpentry house is
an original – we don’t work to set
design templates, nor do we build the
same thing twice.
We’ll work with you or your architects and bridge the gap between concept and construction. This will mean that your oak frame house is not only beautifully designed but also practical, buildable, and cost-efficient.
Every oak frame house we build is handcrafted using traditional joinery techniques, ensuring authenticity, strength, and attention to detail in every joint.
We are one of the few oak framing companies to truly handcraft all our oak frames, resulting in an organic outcome where every line, shape, and design takes its own form.
Our fully bespoke approach accommodates your site’s idiosyncrasies – taking advantage of opportunities while managing any constraints. And, as you’d expect, we’ll work in line with local planning considerations and respect your budget.

Our materials
Oak is a popular choice for orangeries, but it isn’t always the best choice for a project. We work with you to choose the right materials, based on your site, aesthetic goals and engineering requirements. We only use sustainably sourced materials.
Fabrication
Each oak frame orangery is handcrafted from start to finish by our same team of award-winning carpenters. Using skills practised since the Middle Ages, they scribe the naturally shaped components together, making each frame unique.
Build and installation
After dry-fitting your oak frame in our workshop, our carpenters deconstruct it, deliver it on-site, and personally assemble it. Using the same team throughout build and assembly creates a rare level of consistency, giving your frame unsurpassed care and respect.
Bespoke finishes and specifications
We’ll work with you to agree on the best finishing options and specifications for your finished oak frame house. This will allow you to appreciate the beauty of this celebrated natural material while complementing your aesthetic.
The Green Oak Carpentry guarantee
All our frames carry a warranty against defective workmanship and materials for six years. Problems are very rare, but if they do occur, we take them very seriously and do our utmost to ensure all is well.

Frequently Asked Questions
Planning your house project
How long do oak frame houses last?
Traditional oak framing is a building method that has been perfected over the centuries. With good care, an oak frame house can be expected to last at least 200 years, and there are many examples that are far older than this.
How energy efficient is an oak frame house?
Many oak frame houses are incredibly energy-efficient. Oak is a dense hardwood with exceptional thermal properties, helping a home feel warmer in winter and cooler in summer. We recommend working with experts to properly wrap your oak frame to maximise insulation and achieve high levels of energy efficiency.
How much does it cost to build an oak frame house?
This depends on so many factors – the size and design you are considering, any special features you want, your site’s accessibility… With all this in mind, the easiest way for us to answer this question is to have a chat. Tell us more about what you have in mind, and we’ll happily give you a ballpark cost so you can plan your build with confidence.

“It was a pleasure having Green Oak on site and refreshing to see that the team all took a real pride in their work. Despite many changing decisions, the team never complained when redrawing, recalculating and recosting. We now have a beautiful traditional oak frame garage, delivered on time and within budget.”
