Lillys Farm
1 / 4
We were commissioned to take on the planning at Lilly’s Farm in Kent in 2012. The client wanted as much development as possible but it will not surprise you to know that the local authority were keen to avoid over development and wanted the scheme to have the feel of a farmstead, with groupings of buildings around a central courtyard, etc. In this we have only been partially successful, but we hope you will agree that if the development is followed through carefully, the quality of the buildings will by far exceed much of what is being thrown up by today’s housebuilders.
Oak framing has been used with care to ensure the build has the right feel of quality and materiality. Of course much will depend on who actually gets to build the oak frames! Seen here are traditional King post trusses correctly detailed, with the King post having a haunched foot and splayed head.
Glazed gables bring in top light which does much to improve the internal spaces. You will see that we have also included for conservation style roof lights also. Materials and execution will be vital to the success of the development, black painted weatherboarding should be avoided at all costs as it is too harsh, unfinished boarding left to weather naturally is much preferred
Last but by no means least good landscaping will make or break a scheme such as this. Though costly some semi-mature trees planted within the shared spaces will do much to bring privacy and amenity to the development.
“"Just to say that it looks fabulous, and all who survey it are wonder-struck. Best wishes and many thanks to you all."
Simon, National Trust
“"Just a quick note to say thank you for sending such a great team to do the work. As well as clearly being very hardworking and hugely skilled, Mick, Andy, Clark and Dave were all exceptionally pleasant, considerate and cheerful guys to have around, and as such a huge credit to Green Oak."
Julia, Crabfields Farm
“"Everyone is very impressed with the finished result and I thought I would just take the opportunity of belatedly giving my thanks to you and your team for a job very well done. I have submitted the bridge for a Civic Society award for next year and have every expectation of its success."
P White, Northholt & Greenford Countryside Park Manager
“"Thank you for the frame that you have just finished at Rogate. It was a miserable wet day, yesterday and John and team carried on regardless. We are delighted with the overall look and also the mouldings to the members. As usual, the frame was millimetre accurate and will be easy to take forward to complete the building."
Bob, Trembath Associates
“"We wanted to write to you to express our profound gratitude for the excellent work you have done on our building scheme. It cannot have been easy to pick up the project from another architect when there were still a number of issues unresolved, but you have done so brilliantly and remained calm throughout, even at fraught times. We really do appreciate that you have gone the extra mile for us. We have all enjoyed working with you and have been so impressed with the quality of your work."
Alastair, The Early Years Project
