Oak Bridges
Oak is a naturally robust and hard-wearing material, formally classified by TRADA (Timber Research and Development Association) as durable. It is readily available in a wide range of section sizes and lengths, making it an excellent choice for constructing structures like an oak bridge.
For this reason, oak has been the preferred material for building external structures for many hundreds of years, and we continue to champion its use. When called for, we have undertaken projects which combine Oak with yet more durable species of timber, such as FSC Teak or Greenheart. These materials are particularly suited for demanding situations like shoreline groynes and piers, ensuring longevity and resilience even in challenging environments such as the construction of an oak bridge.
We seek to bring an informed and intelligent approach to using timber in the external environment. These structures require careful design and detailing to maximising longevity, ensure good drainage and avoid water traps, and be easily maintained. Ventilation, contact with the ground and proximity to areas where splashing occurs, are all areas to be considered carefully.
